Functional Movement Screen
FMS is an innovative system used to evaluate basic movement pattern quality for athletes.It consists of a series of simple tests with a simple grading system that allows the coach to assess functional movement patterns.
The test consists of 7 fundamental movement patterns that require a balance of mobility and stability. These movement patterns are key to functional movement quality in individuals with no current pain complaint or known musculoskeletal injury. They are designed to provide observable performance of basic loco motor, manipulative and stabilizing movements by placing an individual in extreme positions where weaknesses and imbalances become noticeable if appropriate mobility and motor control is not utilized.
It has been observed that many individuals who perform at very high levels during activities are unable to perform these simple movements. The coach may conclude that the individual is using compensatory movement patterns during their activities, sacrificing efficient movements for inefficient ones in order to perform at high levels. If these compensations continue, then poor movement patterns will be reinforced leading to poor bio- mechanics and potential injury.
The FMS is not meant to diagnose orthopedic problems but rather to demonstrate limitations or asymmetries that may signal the potential for injury if left unaddressed.
By identifying and then correcting such limitations, the athlete’s sports performance improves.
